123. The Holy Spirit and Oil in the Lamp Explain the Return of Jesus Christ in the Parable of the Ten Virgins

In Matthew 25:1-12, Jesus explained the Holy Spirit, oil in the lamp and the return of Jesus Christ in the Parable of the Ten Virgins. This is an important part of God’s Intelligent Design for the world.

Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went to greet the bridegroom.

“Five of them were wise and five were foolish. The foolish ones took their lamps, but took no oil with them, but the wise virgins took oil in their lamps.

“When the bridegroom was delayed, they all slept. And at midnight they heard a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming! Go out to meet him!’

“Then all the virgins got up and prepared their lamps. And the foolish virgins asked the wise ones to give them some of their oil because their lamps were going out. But the wise virgins told them, ‘No, there would not be enough oil for us and for you. So go and buy your own oil from those who sell.’

“And while they went out to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went to the wedding and the door was locked.

“Afterward the other virgins also came and said, ‘Lord, our Lord, open the door for us.’

“But the bridegroom answered, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch, therefore, for you do not know the day or the hour when the Son of Man is coming.”

Jesus always gave parables so that His followers could understand Him, but others could not. The ten virgins represent all Christians; those who believe that Jesus Christ is God’s only Son who came to Earth to be sacrificed to pay for our sins. When our sins are forgiven by the blood of Jesus shed on the cross, we are considered sinless by God. We are like virgins.

Our lamps are the light, the knowledge that we shed on the world by living a life of love and telling others about Jesus. Jesus told us not to hide our light under a basket, but put it where people can see it. The bridegroom is Jesus, and His marriage is when he comes to join with His bride, the church of believers.

The oil in the lamps is the Holy Spirit. We cannot effectively be light to the world, be a living example, and tell about Jesus if we are not filled with the Holy Spirit. Many Christians go to church most of their lives and never tell anyone about Jesus. Jesus said that it was necessary for Jesus to go to the Father, so that we could be filled with the Comforter, the Holy Spirit if we believe in Jesus. If we reject the works of the Holy Spirit, our “lamps” are not “filled with oil”.

The parable of the ten virgins tells you that you must have the oil of the Holy Spirit in your lamp (the light, the knowledge that you shine on the world) so that you will be able to enter the kingdom of heaven and rule with Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He comes to rule the world and to send the nonbelievers to everlasting punishment. If you are a believer and wish to be filled with the Holy Spirit in accordance with God’s Intelligent Design for the world, all you have to do is ask in Jesus’ name, and it will be given to you by our Father God.
